Based in the Breast Unit, this service is provided by the Breast Care Nurse for women who have significant difference in breast size or shape due to surgery, injury or growth defects. The Breast Care Nurse can help you to select the right prosthesis for you based on your lifestyle, health and personal preferences. Breast pain is very common. It has been shown to affect over 70% of women at some point in their lives and can change in frequency and severity throughout life. Breast pain can occur at any time throughout a women's adult life, however it is usually less frequent in later years. Reassuringly, breast pain is rarely associated with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst Guernsey women, affecting one in twelve at some time in their life. As yet, the cause of breast cancer has not been identified. However breast screening can help to find early changes before signs or symptoms of cancer have been noticed. Mammography is the most reliablemethod of detecting breast cancers which are too small to feel. If breast cancer can be detected at the earliest possible stage, less treatment will be required and the likelihood of a successful recovery will be more favourable.
