Channel swim is under way
30/08/2006
Roger Allsopp this morning began his swim across the English Channel
He set off at 2.13 in choppy seas and by 7.30 had swum six-and-a-half of the 21 miles.
'Conditions are pretty rough: the wind speed is around 16 knots' said Evelyn Banfield, a member of Mr Allsopp's support team travelling on the guard boat accompanying him.
'When he started he looked pretty pale but now the sun is shining it will hopefully warm him up a bit'.
Mr Allsopp, 65, hopes to raise thousands of pounds for breast cancer research.
